"You mean you killed them...and the guards?"
Doogy raised his eyes skyward, as if seeking patience. "Marm, they're vermin! The foebeasts, ye ken? Would ye sooner be back there roped tae a tree?"
"Save y'breath an' run!"
Doogy's paws were hitting the path like pistons. "Run? What d'ye think ah'm doin', dancin' a jig?"
For a few moments the young hare scout stood swaying, gaping at the two shafts buried in his chest, then slowly into a kneeling position. Wonwill pushed himself into a somersault, reaching the stricken hare and holding him closely. Then the seargant lowered him gently back upon the ground. The young galloper stared into Wonwill's battered face questionally. "Eulalia, sah, charge the bells. Elali..." Dauncey's head fell to one side as his eyes clouded over.
Tam rested his chin on the pommel stone of Martin's wondrous sword. "Aye, yore right, there, Father, an' so are ye, sir. We all choose our different paths. Some are born gentle, whilst others are destined to be warriors. Look at Doogy an' me-all we've ever lived by are our blades. We could no more live quietly in an abbey that Abbot Humble could take to the sword. None of us was forced to do anything against our will. Poor young Dauncey, he was just one of the unlucky beasts. He loved gallopin' an' fightin' with the Patrol. If he had to die, I don't suppose he'd have had it any other way. It could happen to any warrior. Our fates are in the wind!"
Young Folderon sniffed and wiped a paw across her eyes. The sergeant nudged her lightly. "Nah then, missy, wot's all this?"
She blinked furiously. "Beg pardon, sarge, but I was just thinkin', what a glorious sundown! Day endin' an' all that. A pack of vermin villains waitin' in hidin'. Makes you wonder how many of us'll live to see the dawn, if y'know what I mean?"
Armel shrugged. "I suppose so, Brother, but why do creatures have to fight?" Demple picked Mudge up and placed him on his shoulder. "Because there's always good and bad in the land, and goodbeasts have to protect their friends an' families from evil ones who want nothing but to conquer an' destroy."
'Tis braw tae woo a bonny maid,/for love is aye sae sweet./Yet who'll be left tae tell the tale,/when steel an' fang must meet?
"These are called sausage rolls. Me darlin' Didjety makes the best sausage rolls anywhere. D'ya know how to make a sausage roll, Doogy?"
The Highlander bit into one, finding the sausages delicious indeed. "No, ah'm afraid ah don't know how to make a sausage roll." Yoofus answered, "Ye just push it down a hill, that's how ye make a sausage roll!"
Rakkety Rakkety Tam,/the drums are beatin' braw./Och, now ye've gained a heart's desire,/ye'll no more march tae war!
